Frequently Asked Questions

Are you thinking about applying to the Calgary Stampede Royalty Competition? We absolutely think you should! Here are a few of the common questions we get asked and a few myths we're busting!

Is this similar to a beauty contest? While you are judged on your ability to look presentable and professional, this is not a beauty contest. The most important factors considered by judges are riding ability, personality and ability to speak comfortably with people from all backgrounds and walks of life, including your natural ability to relate to people.

Do I need an entire wardrobe of Western wear? You do not have to possess a selection of Western clothes.  The majority of contestants are able to utilize their existing wardrobe for all components of the contest.  For the riding component of the contest, you will need a pair of black or blue jeans, a pair of heeled riding boots, a cowboy hat and a white button-up shirt.  If you need help sourcing these items, or even want suggestions on how to tweak your existing wardrobe, members of the Stampede Royalty Committee are available to assist. If crowned, you will be supplied with various outfits designed to carry you through your year as Royalty.

What if I don’t own a horse? No horse, no problem. The Stampede Royalty Committee owns and supplies our own horses which you will be required to ride during functions you attend on behalf of the Calgary Stampede, however you must be a competent rider (see final bullet point below). You will not ride your own horse (if you own one) during any official Calgary Stampede function.

What kind of commitment does it take? The commitment is very significant. For the contest alone, you will attend 3-5 events per week for the month of September. If you are crowned, the Royalty participate in more than 350 events over their year.. While you gain many personal, professional and valuable experiences, you also must fully commit to promoting the Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth for an entire year!

Is there anything else I need to know? You will have an Advisor (a supervising member of the Stampede Royalty Committee) with you for all functions you attend on behalf of the Calgary Stampede. You must possess a general knowledge of electronic technology (operate a cell phone, be comfortable in using email, the internet and social media). You will be a minimum 19 years of age and not more than 24 years of age as of September 1st of year of application. You will have received a high school diploma or equivalent. You must possess a current valid passport (through to the end of your one year commitment period as a member of the Royalty). You must be a Canadian Citizen or permanent resident. You must be a resident of Alberta for at least 12 months previous to application. You must agree to reside within 100 km of Stampede Park in Calgary, Alberta if you are a successful contestant. Your place of employment or education must also meet this requirement. You must possess a current, valid driver’s license (not a Graduated Driver's License) and have full access to a vehicle. You must not have a criminal record and must consent to a security check and a vulnerable sector and criminal check. You must have competent riding ability determined by a form signed by you and a recognized equestrian trainer – see link here for the statement attesting to your riding ability
